At excursion company POWERMILK, they bring the citizen closer to the farmer. ‘Everyone is welcome, young and old, even from Friesland! ‘ laughs Henk Michiels. Together with his wife Maria and sons Harry and Jos, they organize excursions on their dairy farm. They believe that the citizen and the farmer should come together again.
The barn, which was completed in 2018, has room for 285 dairy cattle. ‘We are currently milking 275 dairy cattle with a production of 10,500 kg per year, a fat content of 4.30 at 3.50 protein’, son Harry proudly announces.
It became clear when we entered the barn that we are dealing with passionate dairy farmers. In the clean barn, there is an enormous calm. The dairy cattle lie quietly and comfortably on their Bio-Bedding lounger.
Since 2018, this dairy farmer has been running a Keydollar Agri-XL manure separator for the production of the box litter. In the past, we have used lime-water-straw and sawdust. We soon switched to separated horse manure, but having our own manure separator has many advantages. ‘This way we no longer have to deal with a contractor, we don’t have to ensilage it and we can produce box bedding when it suits us,’ Harry suggests. In the beginning, the adjustment of the separator was not optimal, but Slurry Technology has solved this perfectly for us.
They don’t do a free range for business reasons, but fresh grass has been cut and fed every day since April. ‘This takes us about 45 minutes every day, but the use of fresh protein means that we can save on concentrates. ‘I dare to say that our dairy cattle eat more grass in this way than with grazing, Henk suggests.
Since 2019, the Michiels family has been an ambassador at Drijfmesttechniek.nl. In this way, we bring farmers into contact with each other to exchange practical experiences. ‘We certainly recommend Bio-Bedding to other dairy farmers and would like to share our experience’, says Harry.
In terms of ease of work, Bio-Bedding is fine. ‘As long as you keep track of it,’ says Henk. If you don’t look after it, I think it’s counterproductive. ‘We spread the fertilizer once or twice a week and go over it daily with the rake’, says Henk. Spreading layer by layer prevents overheating and ensures that the dairy cattle have a comfortable and soft bed.
Editorial: The principle is simple: our ambassadors are dairy farmers who have been working with Bio-Bedding produced by our manure separators for years. Through a video interview or site visit, we are happy to put you in touch with end users who are only too happy to share their experiences with you. Just hard practical experience and no sales pitches.
